This seven session course examines the holistic and physiological aspects of mental illness and optimal mental functioning. Overviews of neuro-anatomy, endocrine disturbances, nutritional imbalances, and oxidative stress will be covered as they pertain to areas of mental wellness. Abstract topics such as memory retention, acuteness, the body-mind connection (psychoneuroimmunology), and the neurochemistry behind various learning processes will be scrutinized. Also addressed will be applications for current disease states where the student will learn how to effectively prevent, reverse, or retard the progression of certain mental illnesses with holistic nutritional protocols. Specific topics include: Anxiety Disorders, Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression, Paranoia/Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s Type Dementia, and Parkinsonism. Neuro-protective protocols tailored to different aspects of mental functioning will be discussed with emphasis on particular foods, dietary supplements, and supportive environmental influences on the mind.
